Fear of getting an MRI?
The enclosed space, unfamiliar noises and need to stay still can feel intimidating. That reaction is real—and it is something your care team can plan for.
You are not being difficult. You are asking to feel safe.
What is the scanner actually doing?
MRI creates detailed internal pictures by combining a strong magnet with radio signals and computer reconstruction. Unlike X-ray-based imaging, the method does not expose you to ionising radiation.
Most scanners have an opening at each end. The examination takes place while you rest on a cushioned table that slides to the required position. The setup around you and the time needed depend on the body area being studied.
Your MRI, step by step.
A typical examination takes about 15 to 60 minutes, although timing varies with the body area and images required. Your imaging centre can give you a more specific estimate.

Share your medical history
Before the scan, the team reviews implants, previous surgery, possible metal exposure, pregnancy, kidney health and earlier contrast problems. Bring implant cards or device details when available.

Prepare for the magnet
Personal metal items and electronics remain outside the scan room. Depending on your clothing and the examination, you may be asked to change into a facility-provided gown.

Settle into position
The operator supports the area being examined, gives you ear protection and explains how to call or speak to the team before the scan begins.

Complete short scan blocks
The table moves to the planned position. Stay still through a series of separate picture sets, each with its own sound pattern. Breathe normally unless the operator gives another instruction.

Confirm the pictures
Before you leave, the team checks that the images address the clinical question. Unless medicine was used or special instructions apply, most people return to their usual routine.
Do not wait until you are inside to mention the fear.
Tell the referring doctor and imaging centre when the scan is booked. Advance notice creates time to plan the scanner, support and—when clinically appropriate—medication.
Prepare the environment
- Say clearly that you have claustrophobia, panic symptoms or a previous difficult scan.
- Ask whether a wider-bore, shorter-bore or open scanner is suitable for the examination you need.
- Ask about a mirror, music, extra padding or a screened support person; availability varies by facility.
- Find out how long your specific scan is expected to take and whether your head will be inside the scanner.
Keep attention anchored
- Close your eyes before the table starts moving if looking at the scanner increases anxiety.
- Use comfortable, slow breathing and relax the jaw and shoulders between instructions.
- Think in sequences rather than the whole examination: complete one set of sounds, then the next.
- Use the communication system or call device immediately if you feel unwell or cannot continue.
Medication note: Anti-anxiety medicine or sedation must be planned and prescribed by an appropriate clinician. Never self-medicate. If you receive a sedative, arrange an escort and follow the facility’s driving restrictions.
Tell the MRI team before entering.
A strong magnetic field makes accurate screening essential. Many modern devices can be scanned only under specific conditions, so the exact make and model matter.
If an implant’s MRI safety status is unknown, do not assume it is safe.
Fear deserves a plan, not dismissal.
An MRI can provide important information for diagnosing and planning treatment of brain and spine conditions. If anxiety may prevent you from completing the examination, tell your doctor and MRI centre early. The appropriate solution may be better preparation, a different scanner configuration, additional support or prescribed medication—depending on your health and the scan required.
A useful scan is one that is completed safely, with the patient informed and supported throughout the process.

Is an MRI painful?
The imaging itself usually causes no physical pain. Some people find the need to stay still, the table position or equipment around the body part uncomfortable. Tell the technologist if you are in pain so positioning support can be considered.
Can I communicate or ask to pause?
The technologist can hear, speak with and observe you during the examination. Patients are generally given an intercom method or call device. If you feel unwell or unable to continue, alert the technologist immediately so the team can respond.
Will I need a sedative?
Not everyone with MRI anxiety needs medication. Some patients may benefit from an anti-anxiety medicine or sedation after clinical assessment. This must be arranged in advance, and you will need to follow escort and driving restrictions.
Is contrast always required?
No. Whether gadolinium contrast is useful depends on the clinical question and scan protocol. Tell the team about kidney or liver disease, transplant history, pregnancy, breastfeeding and any previous gadolinium reaction.
Can I use an open or wider scanner?
It may be an option for some patients. However, not every scanner can perform every examination or provide the images needed for a specific clinical question. Ask your doctor and imaging centre which configuration is appropriate.
What if I am pregnant?
Tell the MRI team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant. MRI may be used during pregnancy when clinically needed, but the timing and use of contrast require an individual risk–benefit decision by the treating and imaging teams.
How long will the scan take?
Many MRI examinations take approximately 15 to 60 minutes, but some take longer. Duration depends on the body part, the number of sequences and whether contrast or additional images are required.
The first step is simply telling the team: “I am anxious.”
That one sentence gives your doctor and MRI centre the opportunity to prepare a safer, more manageable experience.
