What are Spine Fractures?

Spine fractures, also known as vertebral fractures , which refer to breaks or collapses of the bones (vertebrae) that make up the spinal column. These fractures can range from mild to severe and may affect spinal stability or compress nerves

A sacral fracture is a break in the sacrum, the triangular bone at the base of the spine that connects the lumbar spine to the pelvis.

Spinal fractures differ from fractures of the hands or leg. When a vertebra fractures or dislocates, it can cause bone fragments or collapse of vertebrae its self can compress the spinal nerves or spinal cord.

Spinal injuries vary in severity, ranging from mild ligament and muscle strains (such as whiplash) to fractures and dislocations of the bony vertebrae, as well as severe spinal cord injuries. Spinal fractures and dislocations can compress or even tear the spinal cord.

What are the Common Symptoms Associated with Spine Fractures?

Common symptoms of spine fractures include:

  • Pain: Sudden or severe pain at the site of the fracture preceding the fall
  • Limited Mobility: Difficulty in moving or bending the back or even walking
  • Neurological Symptoms: Numbness, weakness, or tingling in the arms or legs , bowel and  bladder disturbance  if the spinal cord is compressed.
  • Deformity: Visible changes in spinal alignment, such as kyphosis (hunchback)
  • Loss of height – Gradual or sudden, due to vertebral collapse

When is Surgery for a Spine Fracture Required?

  • In case of trauma , if there is spinal instability and compression of nerves and spinal cord with neurological deficit probably emergency surgery would be requires 
  • In case of osteoporotic fractures if rest and other means is not offering good pain relief surgery if required
  • In case of tumour and spinal infection , which are sub groups of fractures secondary to bone destruction which needs to be  treated with spinal stabilization
  • Vertebral Compression Fractures: Procedures like vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty with or without fixation to stabilize the affected vertebrae is offered 


What are the surgical options for spinal fractures

Goal of surgery – decompression of spinal nerve and spinal cord , stabilise the pain

Plan – To remove the compressive elements and stabilise the spine with instruments (screws and rods)

Plan and goal differs from case to case basis , in some cases fixation and decompression of spine can be performed through in minimally invasive technique 

What can I expect after surgery ?

It depends on what is cause for fracture and clinical condition , if it’s a traumatic vertebral fracture with weakness in hands and legs, discharge is usually around 6-7 days, so necessary arrangements can be made by the care giver. Ambulation depends on the neurological condition of patient

 In case of osteoporosis , infection and tumour patients mobilised on same day depending upon neurological condition , discharged in 3-4 days with brace

Treatment of underlying primary cause in necessary
