Sciatica
Sciatica is a symptom characterized by pain, numbness, or tingling starting from lower back down to leg , foot and toes . Sciatica is caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve that originates in lower back and travel down to leg.
It occurs when pressure is applied to your sciatic nerve or its nerve roots in the spine.
What are the Causes of sciatic pain ?
Sciatica can be caused by various factors, including:
- Disc prolapse , lumbar canal stenosis , spondylolisthesis , synovial cyst: Basically these conditions narrow the space available for spinal nerve and narrows spinal canal leading to compression and clinical symptoms
- Spinal infection , spine tumours , pelvic floor tumours
- Pregnancy : During pregnancy, sciatica can occur if the growing baby and expanding uterus apply pressure on the sciatic nerve. This pressure can lead to inflammation, irritation, and pain.
- Piriformis syndrome : The piriformis muscle aids in hip extension and leg rotation, connecting the sacral spine to the upper femur. Due to its proximity to the sciatic nerve, any injury or inflammation of the piriformis muscle may lead to sciatica
What are the common symptoms associated with sciatica
Common symptoms include
- Sharp, burning, electric shock or shooting pain from the lower back down the buttock and leg
